Winter Wonderland

Creating Winter Experiences
Find your cozy space
We create sledding hills, play rinks, and build bonfires to keep folks warm while playing outside. We also keep the fires burning in our Lodge and our crafting space, and we will turn on the sauna so there is always a cozy space.
Whether it's playing around the Lodge on Farm Lake, relaxing in a cozy cabin with a gorgeous winter view, or dog sledding, Timber Trail Lodge has winter adventures for everyone.
Hygge at Timber Trail Lodge
Embrace Winter! Whether it's Hygge or koselig, we try to put it to practice at Timber Trail. Hygge is from Old Norwegian, and translates to "coziness" and inner warmth. "Koselig" (pronounced "koosh-lee") is the Norwegian word for cosines, intimacy, warmth and happiness (and embracing all sides of winter), much like Hygge. Hygge is often personal, or for yourself, where Koselig (both a noun and verb, Kose) achieves the same goals in a more social, and gathered way.
Feeding the Birds
When you arrive, you'll probably be greeted by our resident Chickadees and Nuthatches. They will be very happy to see you, often fluttering about with lots of chatter. If you get a little seed from the Lodge, they will eat from your hand. Feeding Chickadees and Nuthatches out of your hand is very popular at Timber Trail Lodge. Please only use the bird food provided by the Lodge and follow the map to feeding stations.
Sledding
Timber Trail Lodge has a sledding hill that's not too big and not too little. Located near our summer beach, it takes you down a fast little hill and shoots you out onto a frozen lake.
Curling Rink and Play Area
Every year we make a couple of “curling” rinks on the lake in front the Lodge. People play curling, shuffleboard and other rink games. Equipment is provided and the rink can be lit with Tiki torches for night games!
Winter Picnics and Parties
Down by the lake there is a dock where you can place your picnic items. The area has lights and power, so bring your crock pot! We provide picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and fire rings with grates. At night there are small twinkling lights and ice candles. It is a lovely setting for winter fun and food.
Sauna and Polar Plunge
Like all great lodges in the Northwoods, Timber Trail Lodge has a sauna (or two!) by the lake. In the winter we cut a hole in the ice for a polar plunge. Please let us know if you would like us to prepare a plunge for you. The sauna is always open for your use.
Star and Moon Gazing
The BWCA is considered by National Geographic to be one of the world's best stargazing locations. Looking at the sky while staying warm by the fire is our most popular form of stargazing. We have a small telescope that people can set up at night. You can ask for it at the front desk.
NOAA has an excellent tool for helping you predict the timing of Northern lights. They have 30 minute and 3-day forecasts.

Photography
Timber Trail Lodge provides a comfortable basecamp for winter photography at it’s very best with a landscape of snowy pines, excellent wildlife, and some of the world's best night photography!
Puzzle Tables
Winter cabins are a wonderful place to do puzzles. Ask us about availability of puzzle tables so you can enjoy some puzzle time without taking up your kitchen table!
Ice Candles
Beautiful and easy to make, they are one of our most popular craft projects. We have a little crafting station and plenty of candles and supplies for making them. Bring a heavy, old blanket or cardboard box of some type to wrap them in if you wish to bring them home. They transport well for hours when wrapped. Otherwise leave them behind for others to enjoy.
