Location: Ely, Minnesota is located on the Canadian border and is surrounded by the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. There are numerous advantages to being located in the northern most portion of Minnesota.
All resort communities in Minnesota are unique and offer their guests a variety of vacation options with amenities to enhance the vacation enjoyment of their guests.
Here in Ely we are also unique and offer recreational opportunities you will not find anywhere else in or out of Minnesota. Because Ely is located far away from any metropolitan areas, it retains its small town “Edge of the wilderness” feel for travelers and we can truly say we are located “At the end of the road”.
Boundary Waters: Ely is surrounded by the largest wilderness east of the Rocky Mountains. It is a protected wilderness that remains much as it was in the 1800’s when fur trappers and Ojibwa Indians traveled northern Minnesota. (What are the Boundary Waters?). As a protected wilderness it will always offer travelers to northern Minnesota a true wilderness vacation experience for those who choose to travel within the Boundary Waters for a day or for a week.
Fishing: Fishing in much of Minnesota can be very rewarding to vacationing anglers. Here in Northern Minnesota we can add remote lake fishing experiences to our guests'’ vacation. Remote lake fishing can place an angler in waters that seldom see a visiting angler. Our guides spend endless days throughout the summer months guiding wilderness fishing trips. You simply will NOT find better or more experienced guides than those who guide for guests of Timber Trail Lodge and Boundary Waters Outfitters. Ely, Minnesota is the cure for those with OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Fishing)
Chain of Lakes: Timber Trail is located on a chain of lakes with 11,000 acres of water to explore. Our chain of lakes is only partially developed and because it borders the Boundary Waters there will always be portions of our chain of lakes that will NEVER be developed. Our lakes are never busy and you will always be able to enjoy the serenity that a visit to a northern Minnesota lake has offered travelers for generations.
Wildlife: The wildlife in northern Minnesota is untamed and provides vacation travelers a great opportunity to view nature at its best. Northern Minnesota was one of the very few places in North America where the Timber Wolves were not eradicated from the landscape. Unsuitable for farming, the Boreal Forest of northern Minnesota remains much as it was in the 1800’s. It is only natural that Ely is home to The International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center, places you will surely want to include in your vacation plans to Ely, Minnesota.
Unique Recreational Opportunities: Ely is the Canoe Capital of the US and is also the Dogsledding Capital of the lower 48 states. Adventuresome guests can access remote areas of the Boundary Waters where you may not observe another traveler for days. Guests of Timber Trail Lodge can always add an adventurous experience to your vacation either in the summer or winter. See our video ("What else is there to do during my stay at Timber Trail").
